Identifying and classifying recent past architectural styles can be an overwhelming task, for amateurs and professionals alike. From regional variations in terminology to simple misinformation, recent past architecture is generally not well understood and rarely accurately identified. It is critical to the management and preservation of our built environment that we are aware of the architectural resources existing in our communities. This can only be accomplished by creating a common language for which to identify these resources by. It is a common belief that there are no style names to describe the architecture of the recent past, when in reality there are hundreds of existing terms, varying from region to region. Here we have compiled and corrected existing information on various residential recent past architectural resources into a style guide that aims to help answer the primary question of recent past architecture- “what is it?”.
